Roneka Matheny is an Adjunct Professor of both Political Science and African American Studies at the College of Charleston. A South Carolina native from suburban Summerville, Roneka graduated from Fort Dorchester High School with honors in 2001 and attended Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. After being displaced by a hurricane, she transferred to Emory University in Atlanta, GA, where she earned her B.A. in International Studies. She pursued her graduate studies at The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, where she earned an M.A. in Political Science.

She returned to South Carolina and began teaching at the College of Charleston in 2008. Over the years, she has designed and taught numerous courses, including American Government, Introduction to African American Studies, African-American Politics, Hip-Hop: Evolution and Impact, and African American Studies’ first study abroad program to Barbados in 2012.

Throughout her academic career, Roneka has shown a passion for addressing both social inequality and political education. She regularly volunteers with the state Board of Elections and publishes a political education blog called For more information about Roneka, you can visit her website
