Internships
Internships are an excellent way to gain practical “real world” experience in a field of interest.
Many types of internships are available in Charleston, in DC, throughout the U.S. and abroad. Internship possibilities include: Political campaigns, government agencies, public defender’s offices, planning departments, nonprofits, and congressional offices.
The political science department encourages students to intern during their Junior or Senior years and offers credit for approved unpaid internships to political science majors who meet eligibility requirements and fulfill course requirements through POLS 402 (Field Internship) --See eligibility requirements.
Resources are available on this website and the internship coordinator, Erin Blevins and members of the political science faculty can assist in recommending potential internships, but students are ultimately responsible for arranging their internships. In addition, the Career Center can assist and provide advice for placements, resume writing and interviewing and offers a Certificate Internship Program. Students interested in receiving credit in political science are advised to work with the internship coordinator and set-up their internships the semester before they intend to complete the internship. Even if credit will not be pursued, most D.C. and international internship programs have early application deadlines so planning ahead is vital.
