Credit-Based Internships

Political science students interested in receiving credit for local internships are advised to work with Dr. Jordan Ragusa and set-up their internships the semester before they intend to complete it. The department can assist in recommending potential internships, but students are ultimately responsible for arranging their placements.

POLI 402, when offered on campus, includes a field internship in the Charleston area and a class component; when offered online, it allows students to intern outside the Charleston area and complete course assigments online.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Completion of 18 semester hours in political science coursework including POLI 205 with a passing grade
  • A minimum GPA of 2.8 in political science coursework and a GPA of 2.5 overall

Course Expectations

  • Attend weekly class, actively participate in class, and complete course assignments such as keeping a journal.
  • Intern 10-15 hours/week at your internship site (140 hours total for semester). Internships can be paid or unpaid.

Required Forms
Internship Learning Agreement
Students who have secured an internship and wish to receive credit must complete the internship learning agreement form and meet with Dr. Jordan Ragusa.
Site Supervisor Evaluation Form
Interns will be evaluated by their site supervisors and the evaluation counts as a percentage of their final course grade. These forms will be distributed to students and employers at the beginning of the semester.
